Motor City Blight Busters to Receive Visit From
Senator John Edwards

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 27, 2005

36 million Americans are currently living in poverty. Detroit is home to some of these
underprivileged individuals. Thankfully non-profit organizations, such as the Motor City Blight
Busters, are stepping up to help combat the fight against poverty.
On Friday, October 28, 2005, at 8:30 am, The Motor City Blight Busters will receive a visit from
Senator John Edwards during his tour for Project Opportunity. The Senator will be at the Artist
Village, 17640 Lahser Road, across from the Motor City Blight Busters headquarters.
Supported by the Center for Promise and Opportunity, this initiative is a student-led effort to
encourage young people to spend more time giving back to their communities. Senator John Edwards
has joined this group to help further the cause. He is stopping at college campuses across the nation to
take part in the community outreach efforts on these campuses.
The University of Michigan has been selected as one of the tour stops. The University has chosen to
spotlight the Motor City Blight Busters because of its close relationship with the school. Over the past
10 years, they have provided U of M students with numerous community service projects.

“The Detroit Project” is one of the outreach venues that has drawn thousands of students throughout
the years to participate in the beautification and revitalization of the city.
“We are so excited to be able to represent our community and show how it is responding to the
fight against poverty,” said John George about Senator Edwards’ visit. “This gives Detroit the
opportunity to show the country what steps are being taken to reduce poverty, and in turn, revitalize
and stabilize communities by providing them with new home ownership and pride for where they
live…The Motor City Blight Busters is serious about what we are trying to do here in Detroit. We
have over 17 years of history to back it up.” comments John.
Financial support is an important factor to allow non-profit organizations like The Motor City
Blight Busters to move forward with their positive mission for the community. Local corporations like
Good Faith Homes, Qualigence, and Team Solutions have been committed corporate partners by
financially and through employee volunteer efforts. John states “Without corporate support, non-profits
would not be able to survive. Federal funding for non-profits is just as important.”
